Rand x Perrin. Rand was missing and Perrin was worried. He went asking different people, but almost all of them were either rude to him (like Wise One) or so caught up in their own business that they didn’t care about Rand.

Yet Perrin always felt a burning under his skin, knowing that Rand needed him.

And when the facts of the kidnapping appeared, Perrin immediately said that he would come for Rand alone if needed and bring him back. He also thought that everyone would go on a rescue mission. But Rhuarc explained to him the politics Aiel, and why only little part could go. Berelain also cared for Rand only because she knew she would be killed if she lost his protection (few nobles were already killed). Meanwhile, all of Cairhien was dancing, singing, and drinking, as if no one cared about the Dragon at all—whether he was present, missing, or dead.

Perrin has his own problems these days. Faile is angry with him without reason, Berelain is stalking him obsessively, and he’s confused, exhausted, and lost. But still, he puts everything aside because Rand is the most important thing right now.

What did it matter how much land had to be reconquered - or even how many people died, though that thought came reluctantly, painfully - stacked against Rand, the Dragon Reborn, being taken prisoner to Tar Valon?

Robert Jordan shows us how little the Dragon Reborn means to others. And only a few truly cared for him. Also, Perrin took Rand's sword with him. I find it to be a very beautiful and sentimental gesture, as if keeping a part of Rand with him. He did something similar with Faile's horse later, holding its reins as if ensuring that when her horse was safe with him, it meant she was safe too. At the battlefield at Duma's Well, Perrin went straight into the battle with one thought: "I need to get to Rand." Chopping through everything around him, praying that the figures in cadin'sor were men, he repeated to himself, "I need to get to Rand."

And more photo drops! They aren’t dripping with details, but there may be something to be gleaned.

Starting here with Moiraine in her lovely blue dress, still wearing her Great Serpent ring. It seems even unable to channel (still debated as to whether she is stilled or just permanently shielded), she isn’t letting on and is still presenting herself as Aes Sedai.

Rand with his shaved head still wields his heron-marked blade. Come to think of it, we really haven’t seen him use it in the show hitherto, and there’s certainly opportunity for him to in S2.

Perrin doesn’t look so very Way of the Leaf-y here. Definitely seen some action. Golden eyes—surely a bad sign, per the Children of the Light! Not sure the context here, but he looks older and more experienced than in the photo drop with Aviendha. Except he seems to be wearing the same clothes? And the lighting is the same? Different point in the same sequence?

Mat and his trusty quarterstaff. The Two Rivers had competitions of staff(?) and bow, and Mat has enough practice there that he’s no pushover. Come to think of it, we also didn’t see Mat in action in S1, more just … running.

Notably, he seems to be in the same place as Perrin, based on the lighting and coloring of the building. Is he following them? Traveling with them, even?

Not really much to add here. It’s Lan. Could be the White Tower … or anywhere else. Nothing really revealed here. But it is an opportunity to look at Daniel Henney, and that’s never a waste of time.

Finally, The Wonder Girls! Egwene and Nynaeve team up with fellow Tower initiate Elayne Trakand, the Daughter Heir of Andor, which is technically the kingdom the Two Rivers is situated in, but an Andoran tax collector hasn’t been seen in Two Rivers memory, and most Two Rivers folk would be surprised to learn they have a queen. Isn’t the White Tower a marvelous place, where princesses and rural tavern owners’ daughters are equal in station? I’m pretty skeptical of Nynaeve’s story about the old Wisdom being turned from the Tower because of her rags—I would bet she wasn’t strong enough in the Power for consideration. Some people can barely channel a trickle of the Power, others vast rivers.

Anyway, they sure do seem to be going somewhere in the dark, and packed for travel!

Man I have always had a profound softvspot for Asmodean and Rand's relationship, because it is so fucked on every axis and it's a delight. The way Asmodean professes despair even while secretly dreaming of Rand's triumph, the way Rand projects so much of his own self hatred and anger at Asmodean despite the fact that Asmodean proves his loyalty to Rand's cause repeatedly, and Asmodean accepts it without protest because of the guilt and uncertainty that is eating at him deep down. The way that the forced trust that clashes with both of their desires to stay stand offish and guarded and not take risks or be vulnerable. The way the weight of LTT's soul hangs between them, the unspoken history shared between Joar, Meierin and Lews that is haunting their every interaction. It's so. God. Damn. Delicious.

It's also Rand's tragedy with the Asha'man writ large: Rand is so consumed with his own self hatred, projecting it onto Asmodean, berating Asmodean for things that Rand really feels about himself that he can not recognize Asmodean's genuine efforts to reach out, can not think that maybe redemption is possible, that Asmodean is ready to come back to the Light. Asmodean is a man who can channel, and so can not be trusted or redeemed or saved. It doesn't matter that Asmodean volunteers to join Rand in the fight against Rahvin even knowing how likely his death in the cross fire is (which bears out as true), it doesn't matter that he lends his own two hands to the efforts to help the wounded during the battle against the Shaido, or that he tries his best to heal Rand with his meager strength after Rand collapses. It doesn't matter that Lanfear confirms that Asmodean has truly started to dream of Rand's victory over the Dark One, of helping him reach it. Asmodean is a man who can channel. He is a monster. He shouldn't be trusted or liked or forgiven anymore then Rand ever forgives himself.

Anyways I think they should fuck nasty in the show about all this.

Perrin/Galad:

No bingo, but I still have a soft spot for it. One of those friendships that Sanderson's comp het writing wants us to believe is platonic so badly even though their is something way more messed up and erotic happening under the surface.

Cause. Listen. I'm a simple man. It's about the inherent eroticism of seeing yourself in the monstrous other, of feeling empathy, compassion even attraction to a man dripping with the blood of his enemies and with the eyes of a wolf.

It's about the inherent eroticism that comes from the pleasure of prying open a closed mind with your own fingers, of forcing a pretty white clad paragon to get down with you in the muck of battle and stain his sword saving your life.

Perrin could ruin Galad's perfect neat clean world and philosophies. Galad could lick the gore off Perrin's chin and taste his primal courage. It would be deeply fucked up in that hot fun way.
